“If I knew for certain that my entire life would last an hour…”

Posted on

Abu al-Walid Sulayman bin Khalaf bin Sa’d al-Andalusi used to say to himself:

If I knew for certain
That my entire life would last an hour;

Why would I be cheap with it
And not dedicate it to righteousness and obedience?

Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Masruq at-Tusi said:

“I recited to Mahmud bin al-Hasan:

Utilize your youth before it becomes spoiled
And the health of your body before it becomes sick;

And the days of your life before you die
For the one who lives will not live long;

And utilize your free time
Let your nights be spent in some work;

And put something forth, as every man is travelling towards
That which he has put forth…

Abu ‘Abdillah Ahmad bin Ayyub used to say to himself:

In your free time, take advantage of the virtue of bowing in prayer
It might be that your death comes suddenly;

How many healthy ones have you seen without disease
Whose healthy selves disappeared and escaped them…

One of Dawud at-Ta’i’s brothers said to him:

O Abu Sulayman! You know the kinship between us. So, advise me!

So, his eyes began to water, and he said: “My brother! Indeed, the night and day are stages that the people pass through – one stage at a time – until they reach the end of their journey. So, if you are able to put forth for every day some provision for each stage, do so. And if your journey is cut short, prepare for your journey what you can, and fulfill what you are able of this affair, because it is as if its end will catch you by surprise. I do not know anyone who is more wasteful in this affair than I am.”

He then got up and left.”

Collected in the abridged version of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi’s ‘Iqtida’ al-’Ilm al-’Amal’ (p. 43-47), in the chapter titled ‘Rushing to Deeds Before One’s Youth and Health Disappear’:

Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said:

“The believers are continually tested [by trials] to purify their imaan and to expiate their sins. This is because the believer performs his actions for the sake of Allah, so it is [incumbent] upon Allah to reward him for that harm which he endured.”

Majmoo’ il Fataawah Vol 18/291-305

It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and each and every act of obedience to Allâh, etc.) that you turn your faces towards east and (or) west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allâh, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to Al-Masâkin (the poor), and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to set slaves free, performs As-Salât (the prayer), and gives the Zakât, and who fulfill their covenant when they make it, and who are patient in extreme poverty and ailment (disease) and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Such are the people of the truth and they are Al¬Muttaqûn

[Al Baqarah (2):177)]

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen  said:

Among the things we learn from this verse is that what is mentioned is true sincerity towards Allah and towards His creation, because Allah says: “Such are the people of the truth”; they are sincere towards Allah, as on the basis of these good beliefs they establish faith and belief in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book and the Prophets, and they establish prayer, pay zakaah, and give what is dear to them to the charitable causes mentioned. As for their sincerity towards Allah’s creation, that is included in the words of Allah: “who fulfil their covenant when they make it”, which is one of the signs of sincerity. Hence Allah says: “Such are the people of the truth”, as they are sincere in their beliefs, in their interactions with Allah and with other people.

Tafseer Soorat al-Baqarah, 2/293, 294

Ibn al-Qayyim  said:

If a person is sincere towards Allah in all his affairs, Allah will give him more than He gives to others, and this sincerity results from true love of Allah and true trust in Him. So the most sincere of people is the one who  loves Allah most and puts the most trust in Him.

“..fly on the wings of patience and gratitude to gardens of Paradise”

Posted on

And Allah loves As-Sabirun (the patient).
[Al Imran (3): 146]

Allaah has made patience like a horse that never gets tired, an army that can never be defeated and a strong fortress that can never be breached.       [Islamqa.com]

Imam Sufyaan ath-Thawri advised:

“Be patient at all times and in all places, for patience leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. Do not become angry and furious, for those two emotions lead to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Hellfire.”

 Biography of Imam Sufyaan ath-Thawri by Salaahud-Deen ibn Ali ibn Abdul-Maujood

Ibn al-Qayyim wrote on patience:

“Patience is the foundation of the believer’s faith which has no other foundation. The one who has no patience has no faith, and if he has any, then it is only a little faith and it is very weak, and such a person worships Allaah as it were upon the edge (i.e. in doubt): if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts to disbelief after embracing Islam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter (cf. al-Hajj 22:11). All he gets from them is a losing deal.

The best life is attained by the blessed through patience, and they rise to the highest degrees through their gratitude. So they fly on the wings of patience and gratitude to gardens of delight (i.e., Paradise). That is the bounty of Allaah that He bestows upon whomsoever He will, and Allaah is the Owner of Great Bounty”.

“And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near. I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me. So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.”
Surah Al Baqarah (2): 186

This verse is among the same set that commands us with fasting; as we read the words of Our Lord and comply with what is asked from us, we should also ask Him what we need and want from Him. We should feel close to Allah in this month more so than any other month. As Allah speaks to us through his words in His book, we should speak to Allah in our supplications.

Whenever people questioned the Prophet about a matter and Allah addressed it in the Qur’an he would start by saying, ‘Qul’ (Say) Yet, when Allah was asked about Himself as in this ayah, he did not say, ‘Qul’. This shows us that we do not need to go through anyone to reach Allah and ask of Him, emphasising the greatness and importance of His Oneness. This also shows us how close Allah is to us. Allah also expresses His nearness to us by attaching the slave to Himself, ‘And when My slave asks you.’ This also shows the great heights a human being can reach by being a slave of Allah. Other verses refer to the slave as though they are distant and many, whilst here the slaves are being addressed as being near and as one individual.

So we know how close Allah is to us and that He promised to respond to His slave. Now imagine that this slave is fasting and the Prophet has told us that the supplication of the fasting Muslim will not be rejected! (at-Tirmidhi) . The bounties and opportunities of Ramadan are many and unlimited yet the number of days we have to take advantage of it are few and limited.

“how excellent a reward to the (pious, good) workers!”

And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammed), as it was to those (Allahs Messengers) before you: “If you join others in worship with Allah (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers”.
Nay! But worship Allah (alone & none else) and be among the greateful
They made not a just estimate of Allah such as is due to Him. And on the Day of Resurrection the whole of the earth will be grasped by His Hand and the  heavens will be rolled up in His Right Hand. Glorified is He, and High is He above all that they associate as partners with Him!
And the Trumpet will be blown and all who are in the heavens and all who are on the earth will swoon away except him whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown a second time and behold, they will be standing, looking on (waiting)
And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord (Allah, when He will come to judge among men) and the Book will be placed (open) and the Prophets and the witnesses will be  brought forward,  and it will be judged between them with truth, and they will not be wronged.
And each person will be paid in full of what he did, and He is Best Aware of what they do.
And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups, til, when they reach it, the gates thereof will be opened (suddenly like a prison at the arrival of prisoners). And its keeper will say, “Did not the Messengers come to you from yourselves, reciting to you the Verses of your Lord and warning you of the Meeting of this Day of yours?” They will say, “Yes, but the Word of torment has been justified against the disbelievers!”
It will be said (to them): “Enter you the gates of Hell, to abide therein. And (indeed) what an evil abode of the arrogant!”
And those who kept their duty to their Lord will be led to Paradise in groups until when they reach it and its gates will be opened (before their arrival for their reception) and its keepers will say: Salamu ‘alaikum (peace be upon you)! You have done well, so enter to abide therein.”
And they will say: “All the praises and thanks are to Allah who has fulfilled His Promise to us and has made us inherit (this) land. We can dwell in Paradise where we will, how excellent a reward to the (pious, good) workers!”
And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne (of Allah) from all round, glorifying the praises of their Lord (Allah). And they (all the creatures) will be judged with truth, and it will be said: “All the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (manking, jinn & all that exists).”
[Surah azZumar (39): 65-75]

In Tafsir Ibn Kathir is is written regarding:

“till when they reach it, and its gates will be opened and its keepers will say: “Salam `Alaykum (peace be upon you)! You have done well, so enter here to abide therein forever.”

This is a conditional sentence that is not complete. What it implies is that when they come to the gates of Paradise the gates will be opened for them as a sign of honor, and the angelic gatekeepers will meet them with glad tidings, greetings of peace and praise. Unlike the gatekeepers of Hell who will meet the disbelievers with rebuke and reprimand, the believers will be filled with happiness and joy, each according to his degree of luxury and delights. What happens after this is not mentioned; it is left for the imagination to think of its dearest wishes and be filled with hope. It is known from the Sahih Hadiths that Paradise has eight gates.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

“The Messenger of Allah  (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said:

Whoever spends a pair of something from his wealth for the sake of Allah, will be called from the gates of Paradise. Paradise has (several) gates. Whoever is among the people of prayer, will be called from the gate of Prayer; whoever is among the people of charity, will be called from the gate of Charity; whoever is among the people of Jihad, will be called from the gate of Jihad; whoever is among the people of fasting, will be called from the Gate of Ar-Rayyan.’

Abu Bakr asked, `O Messenger of Allah, it does not matter from which gate one is called, but will anyone be called from all of them?’  He (صلى الله عليه و سلم) replied,

Yes, and I hope that you will be one of them.”

Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinn and men) deny

[Surah arRahman (55)]

Abu `Isa At-Tirmidhi recorded that Jabir said, “The Messenger of Allah went to his Companions and recited Surat Ar-Rahman from beginning to end for them, but they did not say anything. The Prophet said;

“I recited it to the Jinns, on the night of the Jinns and their response was better than yours! Whenever I recited Allah’s statement: (Then which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny)  They said, “None of Your favors do we deny, our Lord! All praise is due to you.”

“when the ordainment of Allah descends even the open valley congests”

Posted on

Part from the days where you used to do as you wish
and restrain your soul when the decree of Allah is ordained.
And don’t despair over the events of the past
for none of the events of the dunya were ever meant to remain.
And be a man who is firm upon his affairs
and whos character is that of pardoning and nobility,
and there is no sadness or happiness that is continuous
just as there is no comfort or pain.

If you are a person who is satisfied with what he has
then you and the owner of all possessions are equal
and upon he who’s open valley death descends upon
then there is no earth or sky to protect you from it
and the earth of Allah is vast but
when the ordainment of Allah descends even the open valley congests.
