O’ Son of Adam!

O’ son of Adam!
Your mother gave birth to you while you were weeping,
while those around you were laughing in joy.

Work for the day, the day you die,
that you may be laughing in joy then,
while they will be weeping for you.”

[anon]
Imam al-Hassan Al Basrisaid:“We laugh and yet – who knows? – perhaps Allah has looked at some of our works and said: “I will not accept anything from you.” Woe to you, son of Adam! Can you fight Allah? Whoever disobeys Allah is fighting Him. By Allah! I have met seventy veterans of Badr. Most of their garments were wool. Had you seen them you would have said they are crazy, and had they seen the best among you they would have said: “Those people will have no part in the Hereafter.” Had they seen the worst among you they would have said: “Those people do not believe in the Day of Reckoning.” I have seen people for whom this world was cheaper than the dust under their feet. I have seen people the like of whom would come home at night, not finding more than his own portion of food, and yet say: “I shall not put all of this into my belly. I shall certainly give some away for Allah’s sake.” Then he would give away some of his food in charity, even if he were more in need of it than its recipient.”

Narrated from `Alqama ibn Marthad by Abu Nu`aym in Hilya al-Awliya’ (1985 ed. 2:134).

It is narrated that ‘Uthmân b. Áffân– Allâh be pleased with him – said in a sermon:Son of Adam! Know that the angel of death who has been assigned to you has not ceased to pass you and move on to others, ever since you have been in this world. But it is as if he is about to pass someone else and move on to target you, so be careful and prepare for him (by correcting your deeds). And do not forget him, for he does not forget you. And know o son of Adam, if you are heedless about yourself and do not prepare, no one else will prepare for you. You must meet Allah the Mighty and Majestic, so take for yourself and do not leave it to someone else. Peace be on you.

Abû Bakr Al-Daynûrî, Al-Mujâlasah wa Jawâhir Al-Ílm 2: 73, 74.

Al Qur’an al Kareem:
O you children of Adam! Let not Satan seduce you, in the same manner as he got your parents out of the garden, stripping them of their raiment, to expose their shame. Lo! he seeth you, he and his tribe, from whence ye see him not. Lo! We have made the devils protecting friends for those who believe not.”

(Al Araf (7) :27)

Mua’dh ibn Jabal said:

O child of Adam, you are in need of your worldly portion and your portion in the hereafter, but you are more in need of the hereafter. If you put your worldly portion first, you shall lose that of the hereafter and threaten your worldly one. But if you put the hereafter first, you will suceed in your worldly portion and put it in its rightful place.”

Imam al-Hassan Al Basrisaid:Son of Adam, how is your heart ever going to be softened by the recitation of The Qur’an when all you read for is to reach the end of the surah?”

Mujahid wrote:

“Not a day passes which does not say: ‘O son of Adam, I have come to you today and I will never come again, so be careful of what you do during my stay.’ When the day has passed, it is folded up and sealed, never to be reopened by anyone until Allah, Glorified is He, re-opens it on the Day of Judgment.”

Hadith Qudsi:

O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as its.”

[Al-Tirmithi, who said that it was a good and sound Hadith]

“Have you given any thought O Son of Adam, to the day when you will die and will be taken out of your place? When you will move from the spaciousness (of this world) to the confines (of the grave). When friends and loved ones will let you down and brothers and friends will desert you? When you will be taken from your bed and placed in a hole in the ground and instead of a soft blanket you will be covered with dust and earth?O gatherer of wealth, O industrious builder! by Allah you will have nothing left of your possessions except shrouds, and even they will be destroyed and will vanish as your body disintergrates and turns to dust.

Where is the wealth you amassed? Will it save you from these terrors? No, indeed you have left it behind for those who will not praise you, and you have come with your burdens (of sin) to One who will not excuse you.”

Quoted in Tadhkirat al-Qurtubi

Abu Bakr bin Abdullah al Muzanisaid:“Who is like you, O son of Adam? Whenever you wish, you use water to make Ablution, go to the place of worship and thus enter the presence of your Lord (i.e. start praying) without a translator or a barrier between you and Him!”
